Girls Varsity Soccer · Cedar Valley Girls Soccer Get First Win In Style!

The Cedar Valley girls soccer team traveled to Spanish Fork today for their first game in program history. The girls took down the Dons in a 4-0 win on a very hot day. The Aviators had a shaky start to the game while they where trying to find their rhythm. Sophomore goalkeeper Saige Meryhew made a good strong save to keep the Dons out early on. As the Game progressed, the aviators started to get going and scored from a through ball by Junior Emory Herbert playing in Sophomore Presley Devey for Cedar Valleys first ever goal.

Not long after, freshman Bailey McArthur saw the goalkeeper creeping off her line and from 30 yards out, chipped the Spanish Fork goalkeeper to put CV up by 2. Not long after, Spanish fork got a free kick from 25 yards out. Sophomore Saige Meryhew somehow managed to tip the ball onto the crossbar and the aviators cleared the ball away. Right before the half, sophomore Presley Devey went on a solo effort and tucked it into the corner of the goal to put Cedar Valley 3-0 up at half.

In a hot day, the second half of the game was slower and both teams looked tired. This didn’t stop both teams attacking and CV went onto hit the crossbar from shots by Freshman Rylie Beck among others. Cedar Valley had a penalty kick decision waved away when it appeared that a Dons player handled the ball in the box. In the last 10 minutes of the game, both teams had to be physical and battle for the ball. With 20 seconds to go, Sophomore Presley Devey fired a shot which hit the right side of the crossbar and deflected in to make the game 4-0.

A statement from Coach Mitchell says “The girls did really well today to battle the heat and keep fighting to the end. Spanish Fork are a great 5A team which has a great coach and a great program, I always knew this game was going to be tough. In my opinion, the game could have been high scoring with Saige making some tremendous saves and us hitting the crossbar and post about 6 times throughout the game. I believe we saw 50% of what the girls are capable of today. I am looking forward to next week when we have two games against great opponents. Go Aviators!
